'They must have more money than sense!' I cannot believe how much they are charging for this: www.rideacrossbritain.com.

I charged the guys on our ride £300 each(and to raise as much as they could for the foundation) and we didn't lose out on costs (we got the back up vans donated) so that covered accomodation & fuel.

Do it yourselves guys it's more satisfying trying to collate it all!!! Honestly  Tony

I looked at this last year and my eyes also watered at the price.

Yeah, sneer all you like, but these selfless people provide powerful hot showers, not just any hot showers. Not satisfied with that they also provide loos as well

    Title sponsors, Deloitte, complete bankers.

So they have managed to enlist a dozen or more sponsors and still can't do it for less than "only" £1740  . Someone is making a lot of profit out of that!! We did LEJoG on a fraction of that staying in some nice accommodation.

£1740 is not so much if you want to be pampered for nine days in the 21st century.

I think it is fair play - if thats is what people want and they can afford it - there is obviously a market for it - but ultimate cycling experience ??

It's essentially a nine-day sportive (signed routes, sag wagon, technical support, timing), plus training advice in advance, plus support cyclists, plus all food and accommodation and baggage transfer. It's not my idea of a good time, but it's similar in price to many all-inclusive holidays.

Don't forget the slatherings of flattery from the support staff to which a healthy tip is the correct response.

Its exactly what we supplied for our ride/climb :becool: but I stopped at supplying free beer!
  1. I love it how the presence of a loo becomes a selling point...

I spent less than that per day on a weekend cycling, travelling on Eurostar and staying in Champagne.
And getting completely spannered each night.

it's the thing I get most complaints about. There's not a vast amount one can do about the absence of public toilets on night rides, but we did pay for local authorities to open up toilets for the charity ride, and we did hire portaloos for the start

i did it on me own got a mate to drop me off then pick me up with my van fuel 250 pub diners camping eek how much b&b eek seemed to be slumming but still spent a tolal £ 700, so next time its eith stealth camping or luxury for me and they have to make a profit too so its not so much really

lee1010 God like on a bike.

I'm sorry to see corporate firms charging what they do.

Looking out towards the Shetlands, with just your bike and bag reflecting on the last eight days, for the briefest of moments there is no thought or thinking involved. It's about the closest to cycling carthesis that you possibly achieve.

A couple of friends (neither bankers) did it last year, and they both loved it. However, I can see that riding a LEJoG in that sort of large and organised group would be a very different experience to the sort of thing that Rebel Ian and others managed.

However, I don't think different means, necessarily, better or worse, just different. Some will prefer it, some will hate it.

The cynic in me thinks that the fact that Deloitte are involved tells you exactly who this is being marketed at... I don't subscribe to the whole dentists-on-expensive-carbon-bikes meme, but when I imagine taking part in this then that's pretty much how I imagine most of the participants to be. I'm cross with myself for thinking it, but I bet it's the most competitive multi-day non-competitive event that you'd see. Essentially, you're buying into an exclusive 9-day sportive. The photo's & blurb on the website do nothing to disabase me of that notion.

However, in a duplicitious and entirely two-faced way, I'd love to take part. If I had the money sitting spare then I know I'd probably ride it. There is nothing about the idea of riding with luggage that appeals to me. I've always wanted to ride a JOGLE, but the organisational aspect is a bit daunting.

[devil's advocate]I'd be curious to know how much of the entry fee is for costs, and how much makes up the charity aspect. On the assumption that the ride cost, say, £300 to take part, but you had to raise a minimum £1500 in sponsorship - would you view it any differently?[/devil's advocate]
