Handlebar bag

Afternoon guys. Can any of you recommend a good handlebar bag with a clear map pouch on top? I don't need anything large, its just for camera, extra water bottle and a few nibbles to eat along the way. Also to put a lightweight coat or something similar in when the day warms up or drys out, and of course, for the opposite to happen.

There seem to be so many on the market and I'm not sure which one/brand to go for. Any ideas? Thanks

I bought the ortilieb ultimate, great quality, easy to remove, has a shoulder strap. You can buy a the map case as an extra

Scilly Suffolk I'm no expert, but...

I've got one of these, I can't recommend it over anything else as I've not tried any others but it worked for me.

I bought it last year and only used it for the Summer; I now use a saddle bag, so if you want it, you can have it for a tenner plus postage.

Hi Andy, I was not too sure which one yours was, is it the classic?
Thanks Jimmy, thats very generous of you. The link went just to their website, not to the product though. Could you send again or something? Thanks

ok thanks. I need something a bit harder wearing, good luck with the Aldi one and the ride itself

Strange, it worked earlier. Try this or this.

Mine is, presumably, a later model as the logo on the front is slightly different and the backplate is noticeably stiffer than the rest of the body (see the Bike Radar review).

To give you an idea of capacity, it comfortably holds six large tins of beer upright, so it would be ample for your stated needs.

ah those links work, thanks. Do you have a model number or something? Their review says the back is a bit flimsy, has the update on yours helped?? Sounds ample yes, I will do a bit more research on it as at work at the moment and boss is lurking around somewhere lol, and I will let you know. Thanks Jim

I have one of those, well the identical Vaude version, it's the perfect size but not waterproof. It has a waterproof cover, which also covers the map... It's a pity no one makes a really waterproof bag in that size.
I also have a Vaude Aqua bag, with I preferred to the current Ortlieb when I compared them side by side. I also like the Klick-Fix fitting used by a few bag manufacturers, there's a range of accessories and spares are available, it also means you can swap bags.

My wife got me an Ortlieb Ultimate for carrying my camera. (Nice of her because it was bloody expensive!) The map pocket is an optional extra. Like all Orlieb stuff the quality is great and I have no qualms about carrying an SLR and lenses in it. One snag is that you can't use a normal handlebar mounted light with the bag - the top of the bag would be in the way of the beam.

Yeah the classic one, quality bit of kit, shop around for deals, I think I bought mine at spa cycles, was the cheapest at the time
  1. I got a cheap o from Halfords and it worked well, then I bought a bigger Altura via E Bay for touring with but it had Klickfix fittings. So I had to take the Halfords off. When I finished my trip I found I could get a Klickfix back plate. So I took the Halfords backplate off and replaced it with a Klickfix. Now I use both bags but acctually preffer the Halfords.

Morning, wow lots of input. Oooo that looks good Falwheeler, "Revolution Adventure Bar Bag 3L " cheap too.
Thanks again Jim. "Vaude Aqua bag" is pretty pricey, thanks to Andy and the others too.

Hmmm kinda torn now lol. The Revolution Adventure Bar Bag looks good as is Jims. Not thought about the lights, what do you do with them?!! Also have to work out if the bag will fit the front of the bike with all the wires as it's going onto my road bike - pictured in profile

My Altura Skye (apparently no longer available) has a pastic/rubber thingy on the front-facing pocket on which to clip a light, but not sure how widespread this idea is (my rack-top rear bag has something similar).

The Kick-Fix attachment holds the bag reasonably well away from the handlebars and cabling on my drop-handlebar tourer.

You could try the forks if you are not using front panniers.
Its pretty easy to rig up a flasher somewhere even if you are using front panniers, the problem is if you want to use a light to see by.. some inventiveness may be required here.
Perhaps a helmet mounted light ?
I once riveted a light mount to the R/H side of a barbag, but this would only work on a bag with plastic inserts in the build to keep its shape.

This is my solution to the light problem, it's a rubber door stop fitted to the low rider boss. you could also use a head torch around the handle bar bag bracket.jpg
By the way my bag fits inside the cables with no problems and I have interrupter levers fitted
