Wonder if anyone knows of any good cycling holidays. I've looked at some of the cyclospotives abroad but they seem a little bit out of my league. So does anyone know any areas worth visiting for some nice roads and good weather.

I know this is vague but i'm interesting in everyones experiences cycling abroad.

    Cheers

I fancy Italy, but were doing Holland instead, it's flatter.

I found Lanzarote was fantastic, (bit windy though). On the whole the roads on their tiny island are far superior to the roads on our big one! The drivers give you plenty space when they pass, I presume this is as they are used to seeing cyclists and appreciate the money they bring to their island, be it the everyday tourist on his/her bike, the pro teams who use the island for winter training, or the Ironman athletes who descend on the island every year.
All in all I throughly enjoyed every mile I cycled there. Had more p*******s than I normally do, but I guess that's the price you pay for the widespread use of volcanic lava as aggregate, but it was a small price to pay IMO

Where abouts are you going? I'm sure it's cheaper to organise the trim myself rather then go on a cycling holiday. It just would be nice to get some proper training in the country where cycling was born.

I had a good time with cyclocostablanca in Spain and they do sportives, the only other times I've been away cycling was Sardinia and I hired a road bike in Melbourne, almost anywhere is better than here. I think in the future I'd like to try Mallorca or southern Italy.

    Well you did ask:laugh:

Catching the Bike express to Valence, picks up in Lourdes 3 weeks later. Cycling up through the Vercors, then looping south via Huez, Vars, Izoard, Bonnett, through the Verdon, over Ventoux then to the Tourmalet via the camargue, Carcassone etc.

I am planning on camping wherever possible. Return coach was £281 including bike and holiday travel insurance. Leaving 30th June, wouldn't be adverse to company if you fancy it.
  1. The States are nice for cycling , lots of secondary roads and mapped routes you might find appealing .
Yanks are okay, been one all my life .

    Where are you based ?
If on the south or east coast its a doddle to cycle to a ferry and take off somewhere.
I,m on the west coast so if I dont want to do the Isle of Man ( again ) I either cycle to a port or get a train down south.
There is really no need to go on an organised tour to experience cycling abroad.. just go when you fancy.
As a general rule if you want quiet roads look at France, Spain and Portugal.. if you want cycle lanes then go to Holland or Belgium.
If you want decent weather then go South to the med.

Strange reply..... why wouldn't Gravity Aided have travelled abroad?

Anyway, yes, some parts of the USA are very nice to tour through. I did a short tour of Massachusetts from its extreme north west point to the tip of Cape Cod -there are some undiscovered jewels out there. New England can certainly be very nice in the Fall/Autumn. There are some really nice backroads out there -though watch out for the hills or mountains!

Assuming you're in the Hull neck o'the woods, I'd get the ferry to the Netherlands. Fantastic cyclepaths, and a general Anglophile vibe. Most of my cycling abroad has been in France, Germany, Austria and Belgium, but the Netherlands are good.
  3. In answer to the question, no I haven't been abroad, but have nice roads and good weather, in reference to original posting . Hope you all have nice roads and good weather , as well.

If I lived in a country that had forests, deserts, skiing and snorkelling I'm not sure I'd bother going abroad either!!
Getting back to the OP, I'd stick to somewhere you can get to (and from) easily for a first tour. That's France or Netherlands for me - either way, a ferry is about two hours away.

I've just been looking at Taiwan. Looks like a good option, plus Giant offer touring bike rental at an extremely reasonable price (according to someone's blog, anyway).

I rode across the US. If you have a month, or two or three there are some great rides in the western US. Adventure Cycling Association makes turn-by-turn maps as well as organizes trips. I did the Western Express (and part of the TransAm). Nevada is pretty amazing. There is nobody there. Ghost towns, mountains, and gold mining. Southern Utah has some of the most dramatic scenery anywhere. I have spent a couple of months hiking and camping in Southern Utah and could easily go back for more. Other routes that ACA has that I think would be good are the Great Divide, Sierra Cascades, Utah Cliffs, and Grand Canyon Connector.
